Community of Metros News: Salvador Metro Bahia, São Paulo Motiva, and Baku Metro Joined COMET

The TSC is delighted to welcome three new members to the COMET group: Salvador Metro Bahia, São Paulo Motiva, and Baku Metro. With their arrival, the COMET family now brings together 48 metro systems across 44 cities worldwide, further strengthening our global benchmarking and knowledge-sharing network.

Metro Bahia serves Salvador, the capital of Bahia State in Brazil, with a regional population of around 4 million people. Opened in 2014 ahead of the FIFA World Cup, the network now comprises two lines, with 38 km and 22 stations, carrying 117 million passengers in 2025.

São Paulo Motiva operates Lines 4-Yellow, 5-Lilac, and 17-Gold of the São Paulo metro network. Line 4, the first automated metro line in Latin America, opened in 2010 and spans 13 km with 11 stations, providing a vital transport link for approximately 600,000 passengers each day. Line 5 extends 20 km across 17 stations, while Line 17, a long-awaited monorail connection serving the city’s domestic airport, began limited operations earlier this year.

Motiva

Baku Metro serves Azerbaijan’s capital city and its wider metropolitan region of approximately 3.7 million residents. Since opening in 1967 with just 6.5 km, the system has steadily expanded to 41 km and 27 stations. It carried approximately 230 million passengers in 2024 and is embarking on programmes of network renewal and future expansion.

We are excited to welcome these three metros to COMET and look forward to the insights, expertise, and experiences they will bring to the group.
